Welcome to Macomb!!!
We are pleased to welcome you to our neighborhood. We hope you will find it to be a safe, peaceful environment in which to live, as we have. We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to some items of information which can help you stay safe, become a part of our neighborhood, and most of all, enjoy and contribute to the high quality of life that makes our city such a nice place in which to live, to work, to go to school, and to do business.
Your residence is surrounded by many stable families who will help watch out for your property all year, including those times when you might be on vacation or break. Their presence acts as a deterrent to vandalism, burglary, and other property crimes which unoccupied residences are more prone to when vacant for any length of time. Because they are more familiar with the normal patterns of traffic, noise, etc. than part-time residents, they are more likely to notice and report any illegal activity to the police on your behalf when they see it. If you ever need are in need of neighborly assistance, feel free to contact your neighbor.
In return, we ask that you respect the people in your neighborhood by and acting with common courtesy and adhering to the existing laws and ordinances. Some of these include;
- parking only in driveways and streets designated for such purposes
- keeping noise confined to your property boundaries (turn those boom stereos down) particularly after dark
- keeping your trash picked up and placed in a proper receptacle (this keeps the number of night critters to a minimum)
- limiting the number of guests to no more than a few friends who care about you and your property (and not getting you in trouble!)
- taking care to not leave alcohol containers outside where children could gain access to them
- being responsible hosts and ensuring your guests act responsibly when in your neighborhood.
Following these tips will not only will keep you and the people you care about safer (and free from visits from the police), it will also limit your liability should something happen on the property you are living in.
We strongly suggest that you take care to;
- Ensure that you are adequately covered by renters insurance if you are not on someone else's policy. Many of our residents have been victimized by theft, fire, and vandalism only to learn that none of their possessions were covered. Generally, your landlord's insurance covers none of your personal items.
- Mark your property items with your driver's license number, which will make police identification of your property much easier.
- LOCK your doors! Most property crimes in our city (including the residence halls) are crimes of opportunity, NOT breakins. Locking your doors will greatly decrease the chance that you will be the victim of a theft.
